"Ogives" Egg
This egg sculpture was thrown on the wheel, then carved out in a way that was inpired by medieval ogives arches in architecture. The outline of each carved out shape was painted in a earthy green that highlights the shape without taking over. It was then covered with a clear glaze as well as the tripod base it is resting on. Both pieces were fired at cone 6 (over 2200 degrees F or 1200 degrees C). The egg is 8 inches tall and about 4 inches at its widest. The egg and base are sold together. A copper hoop was added at the top, so the sculpture can be hung from a tree or a hook and even used as a lantern if you insert a fairy light inside the egg. Because of the carved openings, the shadows of various circles reflecting around on the walls is another work of art all by itself. Egg Sculptures are wonderful gifts to celebrate new beginnings. This sculpture evokes the elves of Lord or the Ring for me, and a sense of plenitude.
